The Grand Mosque is the royal mosque built by Sultan HB I in 1773. This mosque is designed using Javanese traditional architecture with its 36 pillars and unique inlays in the West of Jogjakarta palace. Nowadays the grand Mosque is a place for praying and a place for holding religious ceremonies such as Isra’Mi’raj and Maulud Nabi. Traditional ceremonies like Sekaten and Garebeg as well as in Idul Fitri and Idul Adha are also held every year in the Grand Mosque courtyards. The existence of this Mosque is a reflection of Islamic influences during the glory of The Jogjakarta Sultanate in past periods.
