Vredeburg Fort
Located in the north side of the Central Post Office. The Fort was built in 1760 by Sri Sultan HB I, reconstructed by the Dutch colonial Governor WH Van Osseberch in 1787, and renamed as ‘Rusternberg’. In 1867, a big earthquake caused extensive damage and the fort needed further restoration after which the name changed again to ‘Vredenburg’ Fort meaning the peace fortress. The fort used as a military headquarters during the Dutch, English, and Japanese occupation. And from 1945 until 1947; it functioned as the Indonesian military headquarters. Within the complex, there’s an entrenchment connected by a little bridge, the main gate leads to the inner complex and 13 buildings constructed as a bam, houses, and halls. Presently becomes museums to show the history of Indonesian independence. The museum collections consist of buildings, visualizing dioramas, replicas, photo’s, paintings, and things related to Indonesia ’s struggle for independence.
